ELREC PRO Ten channel IP receiver for mineral exploration

Heritage GeoPhysics is pleased to announce the ELREC PRO, its new ten channel IP receiver, featuring 20 chargeability windows and a graphic LCD display.

The following improvements have been introduced in this new receiver with respect to the previous ELREC 10 unit :

HARDWARE FEATURES:

The size has been reduced by 4 cm in height : 31x 21x 21 cm
The power consumption has been reduced by a ratio of three, which means that with less batteries it is possible to have a longer autonomy.
As a result, the new system is 2 kg lighter than the ELREC 10, with a weight of 6 kg only.
The data (21 000 readings max.) are stored in flash memories not requiring any lithium battery for safeguard.
The new system is compatible with the existing SWITCH Plus boxes for automatic switching of electrodes according to preset sequences. In such a case, the receiver is used as a single channel unit ; with SWITCH Pro boxes (to be introduced next), the full ten channel capability of the ELREC PRO will be usable for a higher acquisition speed.
SOFTWARE FEATURES:
Each new reading is stored as a specific unit file, making easier the grouping of readings corresponding to a given profile, specially for the last (edge) points of a line obtained with a smaller number of dipoles than the main part of the profile.
The data format is compatible with the PROSYS software, which means that the operator can easily visualize the numerical values of the data, automatically sort them according to the standard deviation of the chargeability measurement, merge two files stored under different names, introduce the elevation of each electrode, etc.
The ELECTRE II software can be used to define and upload preset sequences of measurements according to any type of electrode array.

Heritage GeoPhysics is pleased to introduce its new entry in the VIP range of resistivity and IP transmitters, VIP 5000, a five kilowatt current regulated Time Domain Induced Polarization transmitter.
VIP 5000 Major Benefits:

VIP 5000 is light in weight and endowed with a high voltage output (3000V): this is particularly convenient for IP surveys in high resistivity rugged areas and for deep resistivity soundings.
VIP 5000 is microprocessor driven for ease of operation and protection against misuse. All injection parameters (current, voltages, ...) are controlled.
VIP 5000 is powered from a standard single phase or three phase motor generator: this eliminates the maintenance and supply problems associated with custom power sources.

HIGH OUTPUT:

In medium and high resistivity areas, the amount of current driven into the ground depends on the maximum output voltage provided by the transmitter; in addition in low resistivity areas, it is also dependent on the maximum output power.

FULLY AUTOMATED:

The VIP 5000 is designed for ease of operation. It has a much simplified front panel: current setting is the only parameter to be selected by the operator. All the other functions, like voltage range setting, are fully automated.

PROGRAMMABLE:

Programming functions are also available through the front panel, but with a special key combination. These functions are used to select the parameters and options that are not normally changed during a survey: operating mode, time or frequency domain, cycle time, frequencies.

This approach reduces front panel cluttering and drastically reduces the possibility of operator mistake. Instrument reliability is thus increased.

In nature, the induced polarization (I.P.) effect is seen primarily with metallic sulfides, graphite, and clays. For this reason, I.P. surveys have been used extensively in mineral exploration. Recently, I.P. has been applied to hazardous waste landfill and groundwater investigations to identify clay zones. As with electrical resistivity surveys, vertical or horizontal profiles can be generated using I.P. I.P. can also be used in borehole logging.

Constraints: I.P. cannot be done over frozen ground or asphalt because good contact with the ground is required. I.P. is affected by changes in surface relief and lateral changes in resistivity. The electrode array length is about 10 times greater than investigation depth.

Method: Induced polarization is the capacitance effect, or chargeability, exhibited by electrically conductive materials.

Measurement of I.P. is done by pulsing an electric current into the earth at one or two second intervals through metal electrodes. Disseminated conductive minerals in the ground will discharge the stored electrical energy during the pause cycle. The decay rate of the discharge is measured by the I.P. receiver. The decay voltage will be zero if there are no polarizable materials present.

Generally, both I.P. and resistivity measurements are taken simultaneously during the survey. Survey depth is determined by electrode spacing. The final report products are similar to those of resistivity surveys.


STANDARD MOTOR GENERATOR SUPPLY:

In order to minimize transportation and maintenance costs, the local availability of a motor generator is a key factor. Being powered by a standard motor generator, the VIP 5000 offers the highest flexibility in its class. Its power input requirements are:

180 to 250 V voltage for maximum output power
45 to 800 Hz frequency
single phase or three phases

FULL MICROPROCESSOR CONTROL
The full microprocessor control of the VIP 5000 allows the following basic benefits:

Display of intelligent messages and warnings in case of a problem or malfunction: overload, short circuit, input, under or overvoltage ....
INTELLIGENT REGULATION:
The VIP 5000 internal microprocessor is capable of excellent current regulation in almost any load. Current may be selected by the operator in preprogrammed steps from 50 mA to 10 amperes. Intelligent current adjustment algorithms are always in operation. For example, the contact resistance will occasionally be too high for the VIP 5000 to provide the requested current setting. In such cases, the VIP 5000 will display a warning message and will set the current to the maximum value allowable under that combination of current setting and contact resistance. Some reserve current capacity will always be kept to insure that the current stays constant during the measurements, even with some contact resistance fluctuations.

COMPLETE DISPLAY:

A back-lighted liquid crystal alpha-numeric display is provided for the simultaneous indication of all output parameters. Output current, output voltage, contact resistance and output power are continuously displayed.
